Question:I'm in a course to prepare for my GED and its a straight 8 week crash course that pounds everything into your head. But should I also take the time and get maybe a study book or something and study even more than I do in that class?

Why are you geting your GED you should've graduated in the first place. The test is hard especially math. My dad is still trying to get his GED and he is 46. The reason my dad hasnt got his GED is because he hasnt the time to study (10 months from studing his math portion) becase of his job and stress. And you have to try and block out stress and study.
It can't possibly be that hard, high school dropouts pass it.
