Questions about educational programs in math and science in general?

Question:I have been thinking a lot lately about the math and science education in the U.S., particularly at the post-secondary level. I have a degree in biological sciences, but I do not feel very close to its fields, despite wanting to. I was never very good at it, and yet somehow I graduated, and I won a scholarship in this field.

Compare that to engineering at the same school. The educational program there is vastly superior to the biological sciences program. I believe that for the following reasons:

1.) The biology classes at my old school focused intensely on memorizing specifics, which could not be of use in the real world, wheras the engineering program focuses more on deriving experimental and theoretical results. Any thoughts on how biology education can be made more like that of engineering?

2.) A large final project is mandatory in the engineering program at this school, wheras in biology it is not. There, there is a focus on developing specific skills

This answer is based on how I understand your question.
Old fashioned education is based on remembering facts and figures. To all outside observers it looks as though the learning process is being fulfilled. The outcome is tangible, much like a garnish used to make something look better than it actually is, i.e. very shallow, and the learners have not really leaned anything that is going to help them unless they use the same technique on new learners by becoming so-say 'educators'.

I have been fighting this type of system for over ten years in my present location and job, with only the odd glimmer of success here and there.

If you look around at other programmes offered by other institutions, particularly in other countries around the world, you'll probably see some that are more up-to-date and are more in line with your ideas (i.e. a more modern approach) to education.
I'm glad someone else seems to think along the same lines.
what is your point?
