I share that fear. Last year i was told the smae thing as a freshman. When we worked in groups i'd hide behind my group members and i wasn't audable when i talked. i'm getting a little better this year, but not by much. Standing on a chair in History to resite a poem we had to write was nerve racking...
As far as ways to not be so scared, well, it depends on the person. Prepare yourself ahead of time when you can, like if you know you're going to have to present. Make sure you know what you're going to say. But honestly this doen't always work. I had everything planned out for a presentation on my thing in math, and i knew my topic inside and out, i lived it pretty much cause it was something i loved, but when i went up front i was froze and ended up reading dead fomr my paper and couldn't make eyecontact with anyone.
If you can, find a friend in the class and if your forced to look at the class, just look at them, like your talking with only them.
It's probally a good idea to keep notecards or something incase you go blank or anything.
If it's just sprung on you that you have to speak infront of everyone, volunteer to go first. I've been told this helps cause it ur one of the first ones then mistakes will be expected.(i've NEVER done this. i try not to be noticed and get out of having to go at all. sometimes this works too, but only if ur not being graded on it)
If you're like me and can't talk loudly, you might want to try practicing voice projection at home. My teachers explained this. It's where you have to talk like from your diafram or something so you speak louder. One of my friends said that she practiced in front of teddybears and other stuffed animals to try to get better at that, so that's another idea. I'm guessing other people would work well for the same purpose.
Don't think too much about anything that can go wrong or you'll just get yourself even more nervous.
there's lots of other ways to prevent the scardiness of it(horrible word choice, sorry, but i'm sick of typing nervous), just try to find ways that you can do and that work.
Hope this helped.

it was like that my freshman year, and when the teacher said that i was terrified. try looking in between someones eyes if you can't make eye contact, practice whatever you're going to say so you don't trip up, practice in front of a smaller audience also.
I am the exact same way. Well, I used to be. There are two important words that have changed my life: Stop it!
It works. With most problems, low-self-esteem, shyness, just stop it!
