Well in a way that is true because Americans are over-achievers the more you do the more popular you become. the less free time you have to yourself, the better, because that means you are getting out there and getting ahead of everyone else.
that wasn't the way it was in my school. the jocks were okay but no one cared a single hoot if you became a spirit leader. (they don't call it cheerleaders much anymore because cheerleaders has become a negative word now.)

the American system is based around diplomas so they just choose their courses and attend rather than stick to a compulsory subject like the Brits, so if the Americans are not good at something they choose something else like cheer leading and they attend for 4 years and get a diploma its more about attendance than about academic study. Many expat Brits enjoy the American system more, they say it is more freeing than the Brit system. Yet I feel that the British system gives young people more responsibilty, systems, organisation than the American system.
