Generally for three reasons:
A) People realize that education is an inherent value and wish to pursue education for education's sake.
B) As a means to an ends. Some professions require this level of education to be qualified, or some will pay higher for the higher level education
C) They get "professional student" syndrome and don't know what else to do OTHER than study.
A Bachelor's degree is a "generalized" degree. A Master's degree will focus the student on one top, what ever their thesis is. There are some Master's program that are not thesis based, but they are few and far between.
