CSULB is about 10 minutes drive from the beach. It has variety majors & have diverse group of students both racially & academically. It's reputation is average. Pretty big campus. Nice weather. Surrounding area is pretty safe. There's an airport nearby(about 5 miles away) makes lots of noise every 10 minutes, especially in the evening in the engineering area.
Wikipedia has a pretty good entry on CSULB http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/csulb...
Long Beach too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/long_beach%...
And Belmont Shore/2nd Street and/or Pine Ave are the primary gathering grounds/watering hole.
The city neighborhoods fluctuate rapidly from very nice to very rough. I live in OC.
I don't live in Long Beach but you are close to several great SoCal (southern california) hotspots. Freeways are central, though traffic can be a bit rough, but you're nearby to the beaches, (Huntington Beach has a great downtown area, if you want to venture south) Disneyland park, Knott's Berry Farm, Angel Stadium (baseball team, located in Anaheim), Honda Center (hockey team, also located in Anaheim) as well as good shopping and entertainment.
I have friends who go to CSULB and they seem to like it and enjoy the atmosphere. They have a pretty good Men's Basketball team, band, and extracurriculars and theatre department.
I would suggest getting in contact with the school itself, I'm sure they have more information for you. Just don't go around by yourself in some of the rougher sides of town until you know where you are...you don't want to get lost.
