What do you collect and why do you collect it?

I mostly collect books, but I also collect music. It gives me a sense of pride to tell you that my collection has now reached over 16,200 songs, which take 52.7 days to play through entirely.
I have the most files categorized as "Game" music (that is, music from video games), but after that comes Soundtrack, Rock, and then Alternative.

I travel a lot, so I like to bring back shot glasses that have some kind of scene from the place I went. Whenever people give them to me I set them aside because I only like to display the ones if I've actually been there myself. It gives me goals to go to more places.
I also collect papers. My desk has lots of papers and I never seem to be able to muck through the stack.
Interesting question. Since I've recently done a major life purge, I seem to be working on a fabulous shoe collection.
Of course, my bookshelves are over-flowing, too! : )
One of my favorites is my collection of American large copper cents. They are fascinating as I think of the many "hands" they have gone through, dating back to the 1700's. Were they in the pockets of explorers, famous people? What stories they could tell!
Overall, I like coins because it kind of forces one to learn more of the history of the country.
