Answers:
if you have written a board exam then it totalling depends on the examiner that whether he is satisfied are not with your answer. And sometimes your handwriting and way of presentation may also cause to loose of marks. so my suggestion is that be prepared to face each and everything and not to loose heart it happens. so iwill suggest you to go through yout preparartion and find out where you last your marks. It is not about fair or not.
Actually the same goes in the business world.

The fact is mostly it is a matter of efficiency. If things can be done by za, why doing it abcdefg...xyz ?

Smart people tend to do things efficiently, giving the same result of hard worker people. However, efficiently deals with time and effort. Less time, less effort, same result. Why not?

Smart people also work hard.. that is maximizing his mind (or brain) to find a way to make things easier.

It will have much to do with the style that a person is best suited to when learning/studying. Many styles exist eg. some people are visual learners, meaning they prefer more hands on/digrams and real life examples to be able to benefit from learning.
Its all down to whether they have learnt to give the responses that win the points.
