What are the advantages and disadvantages of starting a child in kindergarten early?

Question:My child misses the cutoff age in California by 1 month. She is very advanced. She is only 3 1/2 but already knows how to write all her letters and numbers and how to write simple words. I would like to try to get her in kindergarten early. Should I? If so, is there a test she could take? Can you find me a website in California to go to to view the test?

Thank you.

Hey, It sounds like you are talking about my daughter who is going to be 4 in October and also will miss next years cut-off by 1 month.

I took my daughter (who speaks very well, can count to 30, writes and recognizes her name and writes simple words, can recite the ABC's, is wonderful at rhyming and knows all the shapes and colors) to our cities "Child Development Days" back in late winter, early spring of this year and the teachers there said she was ready for kindergarten now but would have to wait until fall of 2009 to start.

I am on the committee for implementing a 4 year old kindergarten in our county. I definitely would enroll my daughter if it becomes available. I know she would benefit from it and so would your child!

Check with your school system to see if they have a "Child Development Days" in your area.
I would not push for her to be in kindergarden at that age, she may be younger and smaller than the other kids, the best thing to do is find a good preschool and let her go there for a year and then let her go to kindergarden when she is suppose to.
I think it's to young! She may know her letters and numbers, but is not mature enough to deal with all she will have to deal with! Keep working with her, but don't push her!
i recommend putting her in pre-schoool.
my parents did. i didnt need it or anything.but it helped out alot.i am now in all advanced classes for my age group.
what could it hurt?
the test in england is to no there home number, to be toilet trained, to be able to write basic letters like the cat on the mat and no there numbers
She is still a baby and not socially mature enough to be in school with 5 year olds!! YOU need to keep her home for 2 more years. Why do you want to get rid of her, so you can go to lunch with your friends???**
wait for your child's sake. Let her be a kid. the advantages there is only 1. and that is for you by not paying child care. disadvantages. Being teased she's the youngest, not having the social skills and being held back and then laughed at.
If your daughter is only going to be 4 this year, I would wait at least a year. Most children are 5 or 6 when they start kindergarten. Despite being academically advanced, there is always the issue of maturity. Not too mention, when she is older (high school and beyond), her friends would all be doing things that she would not be able to do (i.e. driving, going out to clubs, voting). I started early as I have a late year birthday, but I was months behind my classmates not years, but those months can be eons to a teenager not able to do things with their friends.
Please don't listen to Miss Twinkle. She sounds like an uneducated idiot that probably never finished school let alone kindergarten.
