There are some passages that are written beyond your intelligence levels, there are others that are ambiguous, and there are others that contains so much abstract ideas and complex metaphors that it is difficult to understand what the author is saying. I have tried to go back to anything I don't understand and read it again slowly while trying to take in everything, but most times I am still stuck. Occasionally, I come up with an interpretation, but I am not sure if it's right.
How can I improve my reading comprehension if I can't understand anything I'm reading? Any tips?

Take it word by word. Pretend like you're explaining it / teaching it to someone else.
First, you have to understand what is your reading level.
Second, find few books that you read and understand well.
Third, use www.Lexile.com (click "family") to find the reading level of those books
Fourth, read the books that have a Lexile level that is little higher than the books that are easy for you
Than - read more and more complex books. Take books in library by their Lexile level.
Step by step - you will come to the higher and higher reading level
Sorry, this does not work fast, but it works. It is pity that you did not ask that question before summer break.
