Why don't you write to a few of our ambassadors and former ambassadors. Prepare a short list of questions (NOT including "how much money do you make?"). Being an Ambassador is NOT about the money. It isn't a "job" you can apply for.
Ask things like,
What sort of work were you doing before you became an ambassador?
Was ambassador something you wanted to be growing up, or did it just happed?
What is the funniest and/or most interesting thing you have ever experienced as an ambassador?
I would like to become an ambassador, do you have any recommendations that you can share with me to improve my chances?
Make sure your questions start out expressing interest in them personally and in their role as ambassador. You may even want to learn a little about them before you write to them. It will be beneficial if you can find one specific thing about each ambassador you write to that you have leaned that makes them interesting to you. Ask about that one thing, specifically.
"Ambassadors are ministers of the highest rank, with plenipotentiary authority to represent their head of state." Wiki
As far as I know this is an appointed position.

To be an ambassador, its not really what you know, its who you know. Most positions are given out as political favors.
