My daughter wants to take her highschool classes online.?

Question:I don't know if this is a good idea. If anyone knows anything about online school or has done it then maybe you can give an honest opinion about it. Is it as good as regular school?
Would a person regret missing out on the social stuff? Or maybe it is better because you bypass the negative crap common to highschool. Does the parent need a certain level of skill in teaching or academics? Do any of you have a sucess or failure story?

Answers:
There are many factors involved in making a decision like this. For one thing, you need to be certain that any such school is accredited by one of the regional accrediting associations. You will find a list of the regional accrediting bodies at this site:

Many online schools are bogus and they claim to be accredited but their accrediting associations are also bogus. For instance, there is a legitimate Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and a bogus organization called Middle States Accrediting Board. Many online schools are not much more than diploma mills. Students can finish high school very quickly at such schools but their diploma is worthless; colleges will not accept them.

I spent my career lifetime in education, both high school and college, and am convinced that going to a "bricks-and-mortar" school is far superior to going to an online school.

If your daughter is an outstanding student, you might suggest that she take extra classes during the school year and summer and graduate in three years.

I've taken college courses online and personally didn't really care much for them. My own opinion (and I'm sure others will disagree) is that you miss a lot by not actually being in a classroom - the discussions, debates, getting any questions answered right away - the whole actual learning experience. Some of my courses were entirely online - tests and all. From home, who's to say a person doesn't cheat on tests when they have no one there monitoring what they do?
I go to school online. I would make a deal with her such as she can take online classes but has to get her associates online as well. Because you get your hs degree a lot quicker. I would definitly let her do it. She still has a teacher she would just comunicate to her online. Less drugs around her +.
My friend and I were talking about this today. I haven't tried it (I'm in highschool now) but I don't know if it would be a good idea. Personally, the whole social experience is really vital. I mean, the environment of a school is something that kids need. If she really wants to do it let her try it for a semester and see how she likes it. Then she'll know right? As someone else said, you will miss out on the discussions, etc. You'd be surprised by how much kids can learn from the kids around them.
I am currently taking online classes and in my opinion it is just as good as regular school if not better because the isn't any bullying, if your sick you don't have to miss school and you can talk to the teachers any time you need to although the courses are a little harder, but if shes motivated she should well.
