Skip Chemistry to AP Chemistry?

Question:I am a freshman and i suppose i am smart. I am going to take calculus and I took Biology at a college during the summer and got an A. Should I take regular Chem before AP?

Answers:
Well, I would not usually recommend taking an AP before the regular but in your case I would. Anyone who is ready for Calculus at their freshman year is ready for AP Chemistry. I have had three students (who were VERY "smart" and studious) skip the regular level and go straight to my AP Chemistry or AP Physics class and they all did just fine (all got 5's on their respective AP exams). Your background in a college biology course will help you tremendously as you will already be familiar with some of the terminology and basic science skills.

If you decide to take the AP Chemistry my advice is to buckle down hard and really master the stuff (information) at the beginning of the class (first 3 or 4 months). This is usually the stuff that AP teachers skim over (simply review) because they assume that you remember most of it from the regular class. Your strong math skills will make the remainder of the class easier since chemistry involves a lot of math (but no calculus at this level).

Best wishes!
Duh...of course you should take Chemistry first. Regardless of how smart you are, if you don't know your basics you're not going to get anywhere.
if you're taking calc as a freshamn, you're a genius in math. but you have to realize that unless you do well in every subject, you shouldn't skip a base course. what i mean is, just because you do well with numbers, doesnt mean you'll do good with molecules and atoms. i know in my school, AP chem is the hardest course you can take. you should buy or borrow a chemistry book to see if it's subject you an handle, regardless of your grade in biology or physics, or whatever science you may have taken. just remember that reagardless of what level science you take, most schools require a certain amount of credits to graduate. so taking AP chem isnt going to help you graduate faster. if you really think you can handle learning something completly new at a very fast pace, go for it.
Trust me, I'm supposedly the smartest girl in my calc class and well I took hon. chem last year. Chem. is different than a lot of other science classes. It's 2/3 learning and 1/3 memorization of what you learn. If you take AP before regular you are not going to do good. All AP chem is, is in depth experimenting with the basics you learn in chem. This is the hardest course you can take at my school too. Requires lots of practice. I'm sure you will be taking other very challenging classes. I think you should lay back and learn regular chem before.
If really think you can do it than go for it, but don't disregard my advice. I had the same problem but after talking to a lot of teachers I took the safe way out. :)
