hmm...Yes, get him something local that can't be bought at a big mall. A used surf board would be a nice gift.
Get something special, like a craft or a doll that represents your area, don't give him or her something japanese. Just show him/her if he wants to get some japanese snacks!
They don't want anything Japanese. Some things that will remind him of his stay, like postcards, places you may take him and maybe a camera so he can take pictures of what he thinks are things to treasure. I've had 3 foreign students at different times over the years,we have kept in touch for years with letter writing. My famile went to France to visit with the girls we took and we all had dinner. Our FRence was poor and their English was fair but we had a translation book at all times. Both my French girls are married with families and we took them so many places and gave them cameras and they took pictures of our family and made us an album of them and their families that we still treasure, my other girl was from Norway and she spoke perfect English and we kept in touch for many yrs. I wove a rug that depicted a scene from our area, and she took many boxes of cereal from here since she said that they didn't get it there, Instead of a welcome gift think about a farewell gift.
