Modern UK GSCEs are a joke. 24% is a pass at grade C yet a student needed 50% to get a C 20 years ago Discuss

Question:It is no wonder almost every 15/16 year old passes their GSCEs (fomerly O Levels) nowadays as, while it is accepted that the exams are just as hard as 30 years ago, the marks needed to acheive a pass grade have dropped substantially. On current grading it appears that a modern pass at A would be probably a C in the past and a pass at C now a total failure.

As an employer all I see is more disallusioned children disppointed when they find that their none A or A* grades are little valued and treated with derision in the job market.

So what was the point in changing the grading to create this ceiling effect. Should marking follow a normal distibution with grades based on the standard deviation of the overall marks of the population?

Answers:
my 16 year old has just got her results she got what she needed to stay on and do A levels. i hope she doesn't end up disallusioned and disappointed as u say that that is all u see nowadays as she is very happy with her achievement , as i am too. From what my kids have been saying it seems that they already know that no matter what grades or qualifications they have they will , as u say , be little valued
