That depends on how your brain is wired. Some people are tactile, and learn best by writing things down. Others are visual, and learn by sight. Still others are auditory, and need to hear the information. You'll need to experiment to determine which you are.
write it down, it seems to sink in better
well it reslly depends on the subject, if its a complicated subject like chemistry or something like that then just try and compare it with something much easier to understand!! like if they are talking about atoms joining together to form molecules its like 1 person, meeting a mate and having a family, the numbers have increased and the name has changed!
good luck!
Learn in short sessions with frequent breaks, in a relaxed and/or fun environment and make strong associations with other things, almost in a child like way. Afterall childhood is the period in life where we learn at the greatest rate.
I recommend this book, Accelerated Learning. It has some good techniques and information.

Take notes.
If you read something several times, that's good. If you write something down, that's good. But the absolute best way of learning something is to teach it to someone else, even if it is just your kid brother or a stuffed animal (although someone living is better).
Learning is best when the stomach is not too ful, and when the air temperature is less than 20 deg centigrade.
I once got accused of learning by osmosis - I had a full set of notes on analytical chemistry which I wrote when partially comatose after a liquid lunch; I had a liquid lunch every day I attended college. Analytical chemistry was the highest scoring part of my course!
Be warned, though, learning by this method is not for those who are incapable of writing in their sleep!
Take notes. By summarising you will take in the subject content, re-affirm what you've learnt, and it will also highlight areas you don't understand.
a quiet room and deep concentration and if you record hand writing it helps to place things in their correct perspective
Little & often.
The second time you go over something it makes more sense.
It depends on what type of learner you are and in what way you feel most confortable receiving information. There are different types of intelligences according to Howard Gardner and each "intelligence" has a specific strength or means by which the learner takes in information. Some learners are "logical-mathematical" they learn best through patterns, abstract concepts, and numbers. Other learners may be visual and learn best through pictures, symbols, and/or graphs. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/theory_of_m...
You may determine what is the best way for you to take in information by learning more about what is your strongest "intelligence." There are tests available to measure your best way to learn or "take in information."
Finally, a general rule of thumb for all of us is to make sure that we are well rested, nourished, and healthy before we take on the task of learning. Be ready to learn and open minded to new ideas.
