No, you don't need an excuse to wear it. You need to go into school and sit there and do what they tell you to do, and leave the creative apparel for afterwards. Your individuality may suffer, but it'll only be for the 1/6 of the year that you're actually in school (eight hours a day, 180 days per year) and you'll survive just fine.
Do not give the school administrators a hard time. It's always best to choose your battles wisely, and you don't win these.
