Need an 11th grade science fair project?

Question:i want something that is somewhat challenging yet not complicated. last yr i did a survey type thing and it was wayyy too easy. i want to place at least 3rd in my category. i have no ideas so all suggestions are appretiated. thanks :)

well it depends how tall ur are
Check out the Manhattan Project, it's a pretty good film.
Building a synchrotron might be Little extrema

I would recommend building a stick model model of DNA
Only 10 or 12 nucleotide sequences

Then make a play doe model of the coils and folding ribbons that allow 6 feet of DNA to scrunch up in the nucleus of a microscopic cell.

On your display you could show a picture of the molicuel that splits DNA and replicates it polymerase.

To copy DNA, polymerase requires two other components: a supply of the four nucleotide bases and something called a primer. DNA polymerases, whether from humans, bacteria, or viruses, cannot copy a chain of DNA without a short sequence of nucleotides to "prime" the process, or get it started. So the cell has another enzyme called a primase that actually makes the first few nucleotides of the copy. This stretch of DNA is called a primer. Once the primer is made, the polymerase can take over making the rest of the new chain.

The next step does the same thing as opening a book to the page that you want to copy, then laying it on the copier. The DNA molecule has to be unzipped, then the section of DNA which has to be copied must be read. This step is performed by the enzyme polymerase. Polymerase pulls the halves of DNA apart, then reads the nucleic bases, whether it is adenine, cytosine, guanine, or thymine.

Now here is the tricky part. Polymerase starts with the leading strand, starting at the end of the DNA molecule's leading strand, and reading the nucleic bases one-by-one until polymerase reaches the other end.
Study photosymatis. (i am not sure how to spell it). Any way have 3 plants and put one by the window one if your basement or a closet or some where where there is no light. Then put one in a partly sunny place where the light doesnt hit it. take pictures every week (or day) and there you go. See how it effects the plant
you could do a project on what the government could be doing to help homeless people and why more people are becomeing homeless.
I did a project on layers of soil. I dug holes about 5 feet deep in three different places: a dry river bed, next to a running river, and in my backyard, and documented what each of the layers were (from a 1999 flood, when soil was added to level the house, etc). It got me a place in a regional contest where I gave a speech on the project.
Show what happens to the human mind on drugs, this is a tuffy. GOOD LUCK
do a project on plants and how they grow thats what i did i got 2nd place in my science fair
My school was small but I won mine with my project on this substance called "BagAss" its a funny name but I did an entire presentation on how this substance will clean up oil spills becuase it acts as a natural sponge and sucks it all up. It was so long ago I dont remember all the details but it was interesting and I won :)
Good Luck!
Why not do alternative sources of electricity and power in a emergency. Theres a great video on You tube to get you started. It uses two nails a candle, wires, and magnet with a light bulb. Its great. It will be challenging to see how many other sources you can find for natural power. What they are capable of running and do a survey to go with it of how many average people know about theese sources.
Because of the interest in the environment and the push to be "green" along with the high energy prices, I think you should do a project related to that area. You could do a project to compare energy savings of the new compact energy saving lamps to a standard incandescent by measuring the power consumed by both for equal light outputs and calculate the energy savings.

You could also look at and compare alternative energy sources such as windmills, solar, etc.

I hope this helps.
