Do I still have a chance of getting into Harvard?

Question:Before junior year I slacked off and had a 3.54 GPA... but then I realized I needed to change and obtained all straight A's throughout my junior year (with 5 ap classes). I was able to bring my GPA to a 3.71, but did my grades prior to junior year completely ruin my chances at an ivy league school? I recently got 2380 on the SAT and 800 on all my subject tests. I have over 300 community service hours from tutoring impoverished kids. I also won my state piano competition (though I admit it's not that prestigious) and an art competition. However, my counselor said that grades are EXTREMELY important, and I'm afraid it won't matter if I do anything else =(

Answers:
You are very well rounded, and your high SAT scores and community service hours will help you out a lot. Your GPA is actually not very low at all, so amongst everything else you have going for you, I don't think it will be a problem. However, I do have this one friend who is an internationally recognized math genius and travels around the world for math competitions, was at the top of his class, had a 4.0 GPA, got PERFECT scores on his SAT and ACT, but got waitlisted at both Harvard and Yale. My guess is that he didn't have very much community service, volunteer hours, or extracurriculars. I think you definitely have that going for you. Good luck!
Even Ivy League schools look for well-rounded candidates, which means your extracurricular activities are just as important as the GPA and test scores.
