How do you choose what you want to be when you grow up? You know, like jobs?

Question:My parents have been begging me to tell them because they want to know what what high school courses I should take and what college I should go to. But I just can't answer the question. How do I choose? Thanks! :o)

Answers:
Just be thinking about what you would like to do.. You have a few years.. Talk to your Mom and Dad. They can help you... Good luck... XXX
You just picture yourself doing a job. Or what job would you like to help do?
I have the same problem! only im in college and im having trouble choosing my major, this is so hard =[
Is there a particular subject that interests you? If not, just pick a major when you get to college and take general requirement courses until you figure out what you want to major in.
Do what makes you happy, its important to enjoy a job!!
well... if your poor plan on remaining poor. If your rich don't worry about it, your parents will take care of it.
Well, determine your interests and your strengths. What are your hobbies? What kind of grades do you have in school? Which subjects interest you the most? Do you prefer to work alone or with people?
Hiya...

You can chose anything you like but more than likely, you'll fall into a job like everyone else.
Ask around, people with engineering degrees are selling real estate. English majors own Starbucks franchises.
The most important thing for you to realize is that your education is for you and you alone. It can never be taken away from you so chose your courses according to your interests.
Of course, if you're interested in becomming a doctor, you'll have to take those courses to support tha choice. If you're not sure what you're interested in, take a liberal arts track which allows you to sample from all the courses. When you've taken several, you might then have a better idea of what fascinates you.
Just make sure to give each course a good effort and maintain participation and good grades.
stop wondering what you WANT to be when you grow up and ask your self what interests you right now. high school and the first few years of college is meant to introduce you to all sorts of things. stop worrying about it now because your mind will change over and over again.
what is something you already love? how is it going to benifit you as a carrer in the future? i myself tried everything and a dance career that left me flat on my *** with a joint disease. now i go back to what i am good at- writing. something you can do and something you can fall back on if you don't let say...if an acting career doesn't work out. you get me?
You shouldn't rush into choosing something immediately unless you're positive. Just take college courses...like normal ones...get those out of the way and hopefully you'll come up with ideas on the way. Also, I would go to a community college, its cheaper and since you're not majoring in anything yet, you can save money and get your courses out of the way for when you are ready to pick your major. You can transfer your classes that you've taken in your community college to a university whenever you're ready so keep that in mind. Tell that to your parents, they'll think you're responsible and have a good head on your shoulders. :-) I did and now I'm majoring in nursing.

Good Luck!

I am 54 years old and a grandma and I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up.

In high school take a program that will ensure university entrance - university prep courses. Make sure to include sciences and a second language if possible. You don't have to know the answers to all of this now.
everybody takes the same courses in highschool it really doesn't matter.. just take as many upper division ones as u can handle.. u lean about what u want to be when u grow up through your extra curriculars like being on student gov. or joing a sports team, or taking a cooking or rockclimbing class etc. I have also heard taht you should be something that is related to what u liked doing when u were younger. Forinstance I always liked art time in grammar school and now I am an architect.
You should really do some basic subjects e.g. maths, english, ICT or science. This should make you able to do most jobs but if you are particularly keane on one kind of subject (e.g. I like psychology) you should do either one or two of them. The problem is that there are so many jobs out there you have no idea they are there until you look. E.g. most people who don't like blood say "Oh I'm never going to do anything medical" but there are different aspects to it e.g.physeotherapy (sorry cant spell it) which involves no blood. Just make sure you don't make the mistake of being too focused on one job in particular because if you can't get it what are you going to do? Just my opinion, hope my advice helped.
Hi!

Do you want to work with loots of people - or would you prefer to work alone? Do you like music, animals, getting your hands dirty? What are you good at? What do you enjoy?

Ask yourself these questions, then clear your mind and go to sleep. Who knows that tomorrow you might have a clearer idea.

But don't write it in concrete. You can start the journey where you are at now and change course as things become clearer. No pressure.

Good wishes.
I gather you must be in middle school, you'll probably change your mind about your career at least a dozen more times before you get out of hs, not to mention university or college.

What are you interested in? what subjects in school are you good at and you enjoy, they might be different, but then again they might not be.

Do you have natural inclinations towards things. I wrote stories and poems as a young child so my parents weren't too terribly surprised when I ended up in journalism, but not before I took degrees in psychology and sociology and education. My mum said I used to come home from school and teach my stuffed animals what I'd learned so she wasn't real shocked when I thought about teaching as a career either.

Tell your parents that most employment counsellors now know that kids today will work at up to a dozen different jobs and have 5-7 careers in their lifetime, unlike their parents and grandparents.

I would suggest you take as many academic prep courses as you can to hedge your bets on college or university. But also take some fun courses that pique your interests as well or join clubs that show your interests.

You're a little young for aptitude testing yet , but once you are in hs , your parents can get you the book What Colour is Your Parachute by Richard Boles or have the Myers Briggs aptitude test or the MMPI aptitude test given to you to help you identify your aptitudes.

However nobody can tell you what you should do with your life except you. When you do finally choose , pick something you really enjoy doing , so that it won't seem like work. Money is important to keep you independent but it's not the end all and be all. There are alot of realy highly paid people who are miserable at what they do.

Good luck sweetie.
