Is home schooling a good thing? What are your thoughts?

I was homeschooled and the number one way it benefited me was what I learned. The pros are : The child gets to gain a sense of independence as they are in an environment where they have to do everything without much assistance. (This depends on the age the child is homeschooled. I was homeschooled in my teenaged years that's why I say that.)
Another pro is they graduate sooner. It gives the child a better opportunity to grasp the material because they're not exposed to many distractions and they can learn on their own pace with no fear of competing with other kids to "keep up" if they can't understand certain material as easy as other kids.

I would say the con is : It keeps them sheltered where their social life could be hindered because they're kept in an isolated environment not around many people. If someone's going to home-school their kids I would suggest they still encourage extra-curricular activities where they can exercise their social skills because this will greatly affect them when they enter the workforce! :)
That is generally the primary "con" associated with homeschooled children. Their social skills are underdeveloped...because they aren't treated.

And considering that homeschool has more pros than cons? I would still never homeschool my own kids (even though I was homeschooled myself) because I feel that the con actually "outweighs" the pros in that, social skills are necessary for the development of a mentally healthy person.

But it is helpful if you want your kid to be very intelligent. lol
It's a lot of money..but it would be worth it in your opinion depending on what you think is more important for your child.
Depends on the quality of the teachers.
as long as the child has a social life and sports
it really depends on the circumstances. if they live in an area with bad schools, its probably better to homeschool. or, they might not want to have their kids deal with the pressures and bad influences of public school.

but, public schooling prepares you for life. life isnt going to be just mom and dad and the nice people you see everyday. public school is like the real world. even with private schoolers, they go to college and are shocked at what they find.

its really up to the parents :] i think home schooling could absolutely be a good thing
maybe for a few years in the beginning, if you think your child will benefit more by learning at their preferred pace, but sooner or later, kids need to have social contact in order to learn
I took my daughter out of public school when her math teacher called her "stupid" during a parent-teacher conference. I home schooled her and she graduated at age 16. It was the best decision I ever made. I would highly recommend it.
Not for all of school. You have to build your social skills sometime.

Also, I think it is a horrible idea to remove a student from high school when they are having social/grade problems. It sends the message that it is alright to retreat when you're having problems and not to stick it out and make it work.
That depends on where you live in my town we have pretty good public schools no shootings yet and the teachers are excellent. but on the other hand I have been in certain areas for some reason it seemed more prevalent in the South that home schooling was very popular it seems and this is by no means my opinion that the schools are crap over there I saw tons of kids at parks and museums all day long it was part of their schooling. I considered it when I was still with my ex his job has him traveling all over the US and then we could all be together as a family but things don't always turn out the way we want them to. Most of the people were very involved in their churches and other organizations which was how their kids were able to socialize. It's great if you can stay home and do it but it's not something to do without proper research wouldn't want ur kid to grow up to be a moron.
It has it's possitves and it's negitves.
It's not a better choice .
