Question:ok, i know i've asked questions to help me for school before.BUT, i'm done with the book AND questions, and i'd like to ask you guys what you think about it. ok, the book is obviously Great Expectations. my thought is about how much Pip changed. i mean, his definition of the word "gentleman" is completely different. i would like to know tho, what do YOU think made his definition change? he obviouisly matured, which made him think differently, but what else? i've become a fan of the book and would like to dig deeper and see all of the YA! people's thoughts. so, gentleman definition change...why so abrupt?
Answers:
I suppose that when Pip realized that Miss Havisham and Estella never had any good intentions toward him at all, his view of their society took a downward curve.
The realization that his prisoner was entirely capable of a sincere gratitude and willingness to be generous toward others might have made him think better of those who society usually scorns.
And there was also the realization that his brother-in-law could and should have been among his closest friends perhaps made him realize that very humble people at least had no reason for pretense and are, as a result, more trustworthy.
His definition of gentleman changed because of Estella's opinion.
