I absolutely agree with you that it makes no sense to start school so early in the morning. Others agree with you also ----
"Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise," said Ben Franklin. But does this adage apply to teenagers?
Research in the 1990s found that later sleep and wake patterns among adolescents are biologically determined; the natural tendency for teenagers is to stay up late at night and wake up later in the morning. This research indicates that school bells that ring as early as 7:00 a.m. in many parts of the country stand in stark contrast with adolescents' sleep patterns and needs.
Evidence suggests that teenagers are indeed seriously sleep deprived. A recent poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) found that 60% of children under the age of 18 complained of being tired during the day, according to their parents, and 15% said they fell asleep at school during the year.
On April 2, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), introduced a congressional resolution to encourage schools and school districts to reconsider early morning start times to be more in sync with teens' biological makeup. House Congressional Resolution 135 or the "ZZZ's to A’s" Act would encourage individual schools and school districts all over the country to move school start times to no earlier than 8:30 a.m.
"I hope this is a wake up call to school districts and parents all over this country," said Lofgren. "With early school start times, some before 7:00 a.m., adolescents are not getting enough sleep.

Just because of school sports. If we didn't have school sports, then we wouldn't have to get up early. Why? Well, for outdoor sports, it needs to be light outside to play. And since practices can take a long time, school needs to start earlier so people can play sports earlier. So even though it isn't healthy to sleep less, the athletes are getting something from it.
just another way to cram more things to do in a day.. There are only 24 hrs in a day most figure they should use ever minute in a day...
I wrote an article similar to this topic and it was even featured in the newspaper. If you were to go to school later you would end up getting out later which would leave you with less time to complete extracurriculurs and homework. So, it all benefits you.
I guess I felt the same way when I was in high school . living at home and being up late doing homework with my radio playing .
Why do I have to get up so early ?
Now, I think it has helped me to get up on time for work .
Unprofessionally speaking , I don't agree with the doctor's view-point that it does more harm than good .
Getting up early gives you time to prepare for the day ahead . whether it's school or work .
Personally , it gives me time to shower, brush my teeth, use deodorant and comb what little hair I have left on my head .
Getting up early has nothing to do with beneficial aspects of the teachers . Seriously, they could care less ! They're just there to earn a pay-cheque like the rest of the working-class .
So, the actual reason for getting up early for school is so that you won't be late for your first class .
well since school is around 8 hours long, you do not want to start too late because then you will not get out until dark. i go to school at 8:30, but wake at 6:30. see females have to do their hair and are paranoid if they do not think it is perfect. sure sleep would be good, but we have weekends for that.
Its really for the benefit of the school system, to commence all schools at the same time would create logistical nightmares. Since the same schools buses transport elementary, middle and high school students which all start at different times someone has to go first. I am sure this too is another reason.
