What's more important? Experience, or degree?

Question:Where I am located at, there aren't any colleges that offer the education I want to pursue my career. The only way I can find that kind of education is if I go out of state and live out there - something I have never done.

So I was planning on studying at home - taking any how-to books I can find on the subject and mastering it by myself. Is that a viable option?

The career I am pursuing is 3D modeling and animation - there are dozens of books about the subject.

Answers:
try to go to at least ONE semester at a local college or university. but 3d modeling and animation require a cerain amount of artwork experince and knowledge of specific software packages. there are alot of "FREE" ware art software packages that can get the job done.

read as much as possible and experience thet things you want to "take" in school.

personally, I find personal experience is the best teacher.
But a company will be more apt to hire you with a degree and pay you more.

read about everything in your field and learn about "neigboring" fields as well.
Focus on your education first and the experience will follow.
intuition is more important
If there is someone in your area who could be your mentor you would get some on-the-job experience and they may even have some good ideas on what you should study.
