Use the new words in converstions to help you remember their meanings. Even if you talk to yourself (in private, of course!) You can also put new words and their meanings to a familiar tune .
Reading is a great way to improve vocab, but you are doing the right thing. Also, look at words that you normally use and use a thesaurus to find what other ones you could use. Also, writing helps too, because it gives you time to reflect on they're meanings. It's great that you want to improve this. Wish more people would.
people learn & retain info in different ways. it helps me to write something down, like the definition, but maybe you can learn just by looking @. start w/a few tough words by just reading & if next day, can't remember, try writting.
It helps for sure. Try to use those words in conversations as well so it sticks in your head better. You might want to write them down (jot 'em in a notebook) somewhere so you can revise frequently too.
It is quite alright to memorize these words to improve your vocabulary, but to use them in conversation would allow you to understand their correct usage, delivery, and necessity. Try remembering the sentence after the dictionary's meaning. Then you can assimilate the word into your conversation knowingly, and correctly.
I'm pretty sure there are daily calendars that have a new vocabulary word for each day. Those can be really helpful for those who wish to improve their vocabulary.
You probably don't need to memorize them, I'm sure just looking them up helps. But it doesn't hurt to go over them a few times in your head for future reference.
I like looking words up on thesaurus.com. It not only has a dictionary for definitions but also tells other words you can use too. It also has a word of the day. It's pretty cool. (link below)
