When it first raises a bruise it is often so dark it looks black. As the body breaks down the congealed blood and heals the broken blood vessels the colour changes to purple/blue/grey even yellow/green before it dissipates altogether.
So we call it a 'black eye' as this is the worst version of the bruise to that area.
Because its blacker than the usual colour!
