I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don't have maps and I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and the Iraq -- everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should... our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S. -- or should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future.

Lack of exposure to world issues and the place of the US in the world generally. Map skills may not be taught as specifically as they once were. Lack of interest. Etc. There are probably quite a few factors at work.
Maybe the people they're asking are illegal immigrants, or immigrants who cant speak English.
Americans are horrible in Geography. Think about it: When you were in public school did you have a geography class? Now you would think that one would know where the US is located from other sources: weather reports, news casts, etc. But most weather reports are local and do not show the whole country. Likewise news cast show local regions. In fact, news cast are more likely to show foreign countries and continents assuming that most Americans know the United States.
It's all about exposure and we get little exposure to American geography. And I'm not sure if 1 out of every 5 really care about where their country is located anyway.

I agree with Joe C if it isn't about drugs or bangin the ho's then most people are ignorant to it. Well as a history teacher, I think it is because MOST schools put little emphasis on geography. The other reason is that PARENTS nowadays generally put less emphasis on education and have less control over their kids than ever before. All this touchy feely, let's not judge anyone crap has weakened our society a great deal.
