Should there be no uniforms in public schools?

Question:Some say that they limit freedom of expression, but i feel that having uniforms does not limit anything, children can find other ways to express themselves, i actually think uniforms are great ideas, what do you think?

Answers:
School uniforms should only be debated upon by local needs(school specific). As a school uniform can be both a positive and negative thing. When wearing uniforms students will be less distracted by the trivial need to balance fashion with work and socializing. However, the balance of self expression needs to be met by the younger population- yet still be appropriate- seeing as uniforms can hinder active class such as hands on activities and athletic and highly physical classes. Therefore, the decision to declare/avoid uniforms in schools should be based upon necessity and not appearance.
i wouldnt like them because how i dress is a big way to express my personality. on the other hand, you can still change your hair and makeup(for girls) and accessories to do that. ut some people might not be able to afford that stuff, or there parents might not let them change there hair to how they want too
School uniforms make people like lil Nazi's.Hitler tried to make every one the same.
And what are schools doing trying make everyone the same.
Yes uniforms prepare students for the workforce and enforce professionalism. When they go out and apply for a job they can't "express themselves" they have to adhere to a dress code and policy. In addition, my daughter wears a uniform to school and she is still able to add distinctive touches such as her hairstyles, shoes, jewelry, etc. I think uniforms are an excellent idea and I wish we had them when I was coming up. I had to sneak and wear my older sister's clothes and eventually get a part time job to keep up with the expensive fashion trends.
Most all schools have uniforms they provide for phy ed. There are still 'cool people' and 'poor people' in Phy ed.

I dont think that the uniform has much effect on high schoolers, but possibly as elementary it would be better.

Most high schoolers stick with the same friends they developed in elementary and middle schools.
it really makes no difference if a school require uniforms or not. while uniforms may look good, they can also make it easier for students to bully people, & in upper grades uniforms can even disguise gang activity! and while many people make the argument that poor people can't afford the latest styles, saying such a things is entirely untrue considering that wal-mart has the same clothes you can find at the mall these AND uniforms usually cost even more than stores like Abercombie & Fitch. really, the only advantage to uniforms is to cut down on distraction durring actual instruction time. other than that, they're just a waste.
In my opinion there shouldn't be uniforms in public schools because when I was in the fourth grade in elementary school they started making us wear uniforms and they chose the colors black and white, girls couldn't wear the jumper dresses or skirts( shorts and skirts connected) but we could wear the pants and skirts and the boys had to wear pants all year around no shorts even when it got warm outside, but the thing that bothered me was that where I live all the stores that sold uniforms mainly sold the blue uniforms not the black so my parents always had to drive a distance to find the stores that sold black and the school district didn't allow us to wear the Dickie's brand they wanted the dress pants kind. They told the parents that they wanted the students to wear uniforms so they would know that we weren't in gangs. To this day my niece and nephew wear uniforms and my sisters still have to drive far to buy them. My parents never wanted us to wear uniforms to school because they had sent all their money buying us schools and we couldn't wear them until the weekend when we didn't have school. I don't have kids but I say no to uniforms.
I began paying for my own clothes in school when I was 10 years old. I babysat, cleaned houses, picked strawberries, and tied carrots in the fields. I even lied about my age to get a job after school to pay for everything. In my Junior year I gained a lot of weight and couldn't get a job. I only had two sweaters and two skirts that fit. I had to wear them every other day in a school that did not have uniforms. School was so important to me that I toughed it out but it was depressing (major) and isolating among other things. I would have welcomed uniforms. It would have relieved the burden of having to wear something different everyday and allowed me to concentrate on my studies rather than how badly I felt.
In my opinion a school uniform does not limit freedom of expression and is a rather good thing. A non-uniform school students literally wear there personality on their sleeves by the way they dress. Preps dress prep, punks dress punk, goth dress goth, so on. This can cause barriers to form because people sometimes have issues with the way some dress. In a uniformed schools were everyone wears the same thing ones personality is no longer expressed in the way they dress and so ones personality is based only on who they are.
uniforms are a good idea and they are a tool FOR expression. if you are so lazy that you cant open your mouth to express yourself, im surprised that you would have the determination to dress yourself expressively. As far as the rich poor gap what do poor people who cant afford to buy the clothes they want express?
the fact is that uniforms put people on as equal a level as possible limiting discrimination and promoting you to take action to express yourself. If you are so concerned about expression, do volunteer work, join clubs, write your opinions on essays your assigned, make a point on class presentations, just do something. The schools are not allowed to enforce school uniforms that burden families, even the military offers uniform maintenance allowances that cushions the cost, on top of that it can be written off taxes. I could rant on and on about this but ill call it quits here.
I agree.. I believe there are many ways to express your self other then the cloths on your back... at least there not asking you to do your hair a certain way. or eat, walk, sit. all there asking is that you wear three sets of colors... for gosh sack people... your obviously not that creative if your wining about them telling to wear a uniform maybe four out of five days... all there doing is getting you ready for corporate America... most of everything you do or learn in school is actually helping you find, develop and shape the person you will become.. and plus it saves money you can get that shirt you always wanted or shoes... and they prob last longer cause your not over wearing them.. and lets be honest the only reason people are upset of the uniform code is because you cant show of your new clothes too your friends. and come on change when you get home.. and how can so many people be so selfish... just cause you don't see it happing... just cause you don't hear your Friends saying to you they don't wanna go to school cause there getting bullied or picked on doesn't mean its not happing... so many of you sound like are parents... wonder why they don't understand us... they say exactly what your saying... what they don't see. they cant relate too...
Absolutely NOT!

-Public schools don't have the authority that private schools do over their students and there for can not force uniforms
-They DO limit your-self expression
-You can't tell rich kid from poor kid by what they where. Some well-off kids just like to grunge and a lot of thrift stores have name brand close. Also I’ve never seen anyone get teased for being poor!
-I doesn’t matter what people are wearing; bulling and teasing is a fact of life and uniforms won't eliminate it. (I was a very well dress girl in school and I was still made fun of for being "a know it all" and "a drama-dork")
-Uniforms=Uniformity; removing all sense of individually from the student body
-I've never heard of anyone who put "hours" into what they where. And even if they did it's done BEFORE school hours and is there for not the administration’s problem.
-If a parent wants to spend excess dollars on their child’s clothing then they will, it's their choice.
-As long as the school enforces a dress code then there should be no problem with modesty (In all the schools I went to if a student was dressed inappropriately they would have to wear their gym uniform for the rest of the day and a call would be placed to their parents)
-The clothing you wear doesn’t make friends for you. Most children who feel alone don't put out the effort to join in on activates that would help them make friends.
-These are kid fun years. They only have so much time before the real world hits then in the face. Uniforms are just as restricting as the stuffy adult world where "proper work attire" is required and you can only wear jeans on weekends.

Uniforms are understandable in religious or privet schools but in public school there just a crime against individuality!
I am against the idea of school uniforms because it is essentially punishing everyone for the actions of a few people who do not know how to dress appropriately for school. Why does our society always choose to solve every problem that we deal with in life the same way, by punishing everyone involved no matter what. We always choose the easiest solution to any problem because it is the only way that we know how to do it in this country. We need to stop looking for the easiest solution to a problem, which is to punish everyone, and start looking at more fair and reasonable solutions to all of our problems. Do you really want to know why people always say that life is unfair? It is because we all make it so unfair. When I was in school, I always dressed appropriately, and my parents made sure of that. My parents were not unreasonably strict about it but, they did make sure that I was not going to school with unwashed clothes, holes all over my clothes, clothes that were way too big for me, pants that were so loose fitting that most of my underwear showed, which is really stupid looking, etc. I have a solution to this problem. All of you parents out there need to start learning how to say no to your kids when it is necessary to do so. Parents are supposed to be the responsible adults of the family, so they should start acting like it. The schools should have a reasonable dress code that is strictly enforced, which does not allow the things that I have already mentioned, and some other things also. Any student who does not follow the rules will have to stay an extra 2 hours after school, and do janitorial work for the school. These solutions along with some others would probably solve this problem in a more fair and reasonable way. That way, we would not have to punish everyone! One more thing, how can we honestly expect these kids to dress and behave appropriately, when the parents and adults can't even manage to do so. It all starts at the top!
