Be yourself. No one wants to hang around someone who is trying to be something they're not. If you act like yourself, you will make friends who are like you and you'll be much happier than you would be around a bunch of people who don't know the real you.
Relax. High school isn't as bad as you think it is. I found that once I got into high school it was much easier for me to make friends and be myself. Just sit back and wait for the right people to come along.
Be friendly. Smile and greet people. Friendliness works a lot better than being rude or silent.
Don't worry about acting like a nerd. Even nerds find their place in high school. I should know. I'm the president of the anime club. ;) But I still have a lot of great friends who are willing to be there for me and make life a little easier. You'll be able to find your own way in high school, so just be yourself.

I know everyone else is saying this, but you need to be yourself. Its amazing how many people you Will meet that are a lot like you. Besides I'm not "popular" and have so many friends I couldn't count them! The meaning of "popular" is pretty much spending hours every morning to do your hair, wearing too much make-up, and being as nasty as possible to other people. These "popular people won't bother you once they see how many friends you have. Find people who are sitting alone and be nice to them. The more friends the merrier!
