Shooting an elephant. how does the narrator see himself?

Question:I know that he is a police officer but it seems like he doesn't like being one. I am not sure any help would be appreciated. I don't know how he sees himself.

Answers:
I read this almost a year ago now, so it's been quite a while. But if I remember correctly, the narrator is not quite sure how he sees himself. I think he has a conflict with conscience vs. duty. For example, in one way, he hates the Burmese people for being against him, but at the same time he understands their hatred toward him since he knows he is oppressing the natives. As another example, he does not want to shoot the elephant because his conscience tells him not to, but on the other hand he must fulfull his duty as a police officer. Not shooting the elephant would make him seem cowardly, and reveal a weak link to the Burmese people.

Not sure if that's exactly what you were looking for..I hope I helped some haha
