Im sick of hearing how unfair it is. If a student wants to continue his/her education, there are plenty of opportunities to do so. If a student will actually try in high school, then he or she should have no problem getting a full ride to a public university or at the absolute least a junior college, and then the person could earn a scholarship to a university from there. The problem is, they probably horsed around in high school, then wondered why they didn't receive scholarships. It is not the government's responsibility to provide a college education to every person, knowing that most of them won't graduate.
it's a right after a certain point. it's a privilege/decision after that. the quality of education is however always a privilege... or just plain luck
It shoudl be a right beacsuse not all of us have the money to go to college. I had to drop out of college and join the navy because I couldn't pay for it. It's just not fair to those that cant afford it.
It should be a right--intelligence is not distributed only to the children of the wealthy, and society as a whole loses out when genius is denied because the children of the poor cannot afford to continue their education!
First lets look at your notion of rights. From within a US perspective this is a legal question and the US constitution does not list it as a right. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 26 lists education as a right however.
If I want a citizenry that can participate in an economy and in government, then I am in favor of universal quality education. If I want to perpetuate a class system, then I am in favor of a tiered school system, some for the rich, less for the poor. If I am in favor of obedience, then school is right out.
In the US, education is a right. The choice of the quality (school district, private vs public vs homeschool) is a privilege. However, while some do have a tougher or easier life, a student's determination and home support can greatly affect the individual's outcome no matter what the quality of education. Some children in other countries cannot even dare to entertain the notion of attending school.
It is a right. The parent's decisions on when they wanted to drop out should not make their child forced into a bad situation.
