Is anyone else disrespected because they are in marching band?

Question:I really feel that my school has no appreciation for us students in marching band - all they care about is the football team. It's really annoying though because our football team haven't won a single game in 3 years, but they still get all the glory. Marching band, on the other hand, are 4 time defending champions, we placed in the top ten the last 3 years for years, and we atleast place in every competition that we go to. Why is it that even though we are the true champions of our school, we get no respect?

ehh, it's also annoying that people complain that we complain about band camp. seriously, once they march in a parking lot in 95 degree weather from 8am-3pm for 3 weeks, then they can talk. but until then.. -eyeroll-

Answers:
I am truly sorry that the ignorance of others has an affect on you.

A few points I'd like to make.

Band IS sport. I'm not saying that we work any harder than any other sports team. I would just like us to receive EQUAL credit for what we do.

We are held to a much higher standard than most other organizations in school. We not only have to march to specific sets completely flawlessly and in time with magnificent posture, we also have to memorize and perform 7.5 to 8 minutes worth of music in a beautiful, calm, wonderful tone.

You think 95 degree weather is bad? During our summer band practices, it was between 98 and 101 degrees, with a heat index (which factors in humidity) of over 110 degrees.

We not only march in the (incredibly hideous) sunshine, but also in the pouring rain. It can be raining so hard that the people standing 4 steps behind the front side line can't even see the drum majors, but as long as there's no lightning in sight, the band is marching. The football team goes in when it thunders, but the band marches on.

We sacrifice so much time for band. We stay after school every day to either practice or play-off music, and what credit do we get for it? Well, at my school, luckily, we get standing ovations at the football half-times. Our band is respected by many adults, yet the majority of the student body remains ignorant.

Hold your head high and let anyone who discourages you remain buried in their blissful ignorance. Just do not steep to their level.

Ignorance to them, may be bliss, but to me, it is a living hell.
yeah me too! im in band and all the kids are either jealous or pissed cuz if i join next year then we get to go to like knotts or 6 flags or disney (unless ur the untalented ones u go to see movies if ur in builder's club) its sad. and the kids at the high school close to us in band are "the geeks" and most of the cool kids are in band! :0 the world is not fair! *sighs*
I love Marching band, and have a lot of respect for the people in them!
Marching band isn't as exciting as football, but I have respect for people who know how to play an instrument and are in marching band, because I know being in band is tough stuff. Our band team is out there almost everyday from 7 in the morning to probably 7 at night.

To be honest though, I don't really get along with a lot of band people. Some of them are either pretentious, annoying or stupid. Different interests, I guess.
My dad was a band director until he retired several years ago, and I was always in marching band. This was many years ago. I had the same problem then that you do now. It was all sports and cheerleaders.
I've never been in marching band. But I think it's the nerdy costumes you wear with plumed hats that gives you guys a bad name.
Hey, quit complaining. The kids in my high school band got crap because they were treated like a sport...they got Varsity letters and everything! BAND IS NOT A SPORT!

And quit whining about band camp. Boo hoo, you match around for 3 weeks... cross country and football practice all summer long!
I can sympathize!! I was a "band geek" and proud of it! Unfortunately, we did not get our trip to New York because the orchestra director decided that his group should have a turn (before, it was just the band and the choir groups that went to Europe or New York or wherever, but now the orchestra wanted to take a trip every other year). That was my 11th grade. Then, when we should have gone for my senior year (in my 10th grade, it was the choir's turn, so we thought we'd be able to go for 12th grade), the choir said that it was their turn--that the band had "willingly" given up the spot for travel to the orchestra. How "fair" is that, when the choir had already travelled 2 years prior and my class (Class of 1985) hadn't travelled at all? (Yeah, still bitter--I really wanted to go to NYC!)

Now, my daughter is in band and every year they go to Disneyland (she's begging me not to chaperone, but oh, well!)

Football is considered a big deal here, too. If you think about it, sports are a national past-time (AFL/NFL, NBA, MBA) and band isn't celebrated really (we're "entertainment" until the ball's in play again).

The next time that your band succeeds in a contest (getting a trophy or some top honor), perhaps everyone can chip in a little money towards a newspaper ad, saying "Congratulations, (your high school name) Marching Band!!" Then, list what your honor is (Best Band, Best Performance, etc.) and where you earned it (state band trials, etc.). Or, have your instructor request it be put on your high school reader board or something!!

Whatever happens, though, BE PROUD of your accomplishments in band!! Enjoy your time in it because it will be over quickly and you will have wonderful memories of what you did!!
yea they call us band geeks but im proud 2 b n band so w/e 2 them and yes it is hot andi say the should have 2 go out and do marching like our football players apreciate us casue tey basically have the same amout of running as us
