I've heard that in high school you'll be carrying less in your backpack because you have a locker, so do you think just an over-the-shoulder bag would be okay for a backpack? I bought one, but I'm starting to worry that it'll become too heavy or something (I tried a shoulder bag in 4th grade, didn't work).

Since there are little time between classes, so you need to learn your route to see when do you have time to stop by your locker. So you will carry your 1st and 2nd periods book together, then stop by your locker, get 3rd period. it will take about a week to get this routine down to science. And another good thing is that if you have a friend whose locker is outside your 3rd period, but that is another story.
So, decorate your locker according to your need, usually, you don't have too much time to hang around your locker, because there isn't much time. Don't worry too much over this :)
As for book bag, it will depend on your need and how heavy your books are... good luck

I'm a freshmen this yr too! And i use an over the shoulder one side bag. Just like a medium sized one from Abercrombie.
As long as you have the stuff for that period in your bag, your good. As a freshmen we REALLY use our lockers becuz we're not used to carring so many books around. I really use mine too, but like locker acessories rn't really nessesariy.
I mean all i have in my locker is magnets, a mirror and like friends' pictures. Plus i share my locker with my friend...
Just see how your school is and if needed, you can buy the necessary stuff. You'll have a lot of stuff to carry, so a locker REALLLLLY helps take that heavy load off.

when i was a freshman, yes i used my locker. but i deff didnt have time to write on a whiteboard, look in the mirror, etc.
okay, for your first question, I used my locker as much in my freshman year as i have every other year since then. In my school, people dont use their locker more or less at one time than any other time. I wouldnt reccommend using a shoulder bag because it can cause a lot of wear on your shoulders. you can try it if it will be more convenient for you, but I just usually carry my books around with me. As a freshman, you use your locker!! It's not until you have a car that you really don't use your locker as much. And, again, you do use a backpack. In highschool you actually get homework, and since you don't have a car, get a decent sized one.
I used my locker a lot and carried few books but a friend of mine just carried all his books in an enormous backpack so it depends on what u prefer
K.I'm a Junior. And I must say...OH HELL YEAH!
My locker partner and I used if for everything! We didn't have no shelfs or nothing, but we had a white board, and our books always went in there so we didn't have to carry them home and crap. We used it for a garbage can, a closet and a locker...
And I had a over the shoulder bag in my freshman year... Both of us did(my locker partner)...THEY SUCK! They only carry SO many books, and all the weight goes to one shoulder, so it kills that one, so you switch and kill the other one... And since it only carries so many books, you end up having to carry the rest, or leave them behind... which leaves you with unfinished homework.
I ended up stealing a friend's regular backpack that he stored in our locker for the rest of the year and most of my sophmore year until I got a better one.
Oh! and with the over-the-shoulder... my parter had to have it on one shoulder only because if she switched it she started to walk at an angle and it felt awkward and such...
Overall, you will use your locker, and get a regular backpack...Save your shoulders some trouble.
Well I didn't use a locker last year when I was a freshmen, just because it was out of the way. I tend to not use them because I'm afraid I'll forget things in there that I need. Everybody has preference to whether they need to use a locker or not. Get one in case, so if you need it you can have it.
Sling bags are ok, but they're not good if your carrying books and binders in the bag, because they put all the pressure on one side of the shoulder. Get a backpack to balance out the weight, and easier to store what you need to carry. Good luck and have fun being a freshman. :]
I used my locker all the time my freshman year, but only to keep my books and backpack in. there is no reason to by the whiteboards and things, because you don't get a whole lot of time at your locker. It definately is useful, but it may also not be very big. Our school has small lockers, which are probably 6 inches in width about 1ft and 1/2 in depth and like6 ft tall. You may also have to share a locker like some other schools do. Just ask around to see what kind of situation it is before you go out and purchase certain items
okay I was a freshman last year, and I guess it really depends on the size of you're school... like if the campus is really big or small. like it depends on how far away all your classes are from your locker. I used my locker last year all year to keep my books in so I didn't have to carry all of them around all day, but then again we had 5 minutes in between classes and I didn't have any classes that were really inconvenient to have to go all the way to my locker. but anyway no one really decorated their lockers with mirrors and crap.. I had a shelf in mine because it's convenient and I just had a couple pictures of friends in my locker and that was it, no one notices your locker and no one cares and you really don't have time to mess with it anyway.. so it really doesn't matter if it looks cute.
if it turns out to be inconvenient to have to go to your locker, then yeah use a backpack. but if you're going to get a backpack, don't get a side backpack because if it didn't work in 4th grade it definatly won't work now because there's a lot more to take home and carry around if you must.

Some freshman use it, some dont. A lot of them dont, becasue they arent used to the layout of the school, so they have trouble finding their locker. They'll do whats called the freshman backpack. They keep everything in their bag.
Dont do that, it sucks and its heavy, lol.
Dont buy stuff to put in your locker. You wont need it.
Alrighty, here's my advice from a wise Senior. You don't really need tons of stuff in your locker. It is a good idea to get a locker shelf so you can store papers and stuff (you can make one in shop class, if you have it). You will on the occasion have time to chill at your locker, such as after school, during lunch, and long breaks. What I did was put some photos in my locker and an occasional reminder or two. If you have a whiteboard, use it to be a reminder board of assignments, classes, and other important things you might forget. However, remember that the objects you put on the inside of your locker door might fall off or go flying somewhere when you slam it close. Also, keep your combination in your wallet or something so you have it written down in case you ever forget it. It is also very beneficial to have a regular backpack, just make sure it pretty heavy-duty, cause later in High School, the homework load will increase.
Don't worry about HS. It's really fun and relaxed, just be sure to make new friends, no matter the grade.
