When you first get started scope out who the positive minded people are from the troublemakers. You don't want to get a bad reputation.
Like the other two said, be yourself, get involved with the different school organizations and all the school has to offer you. Let the students who want to hang with you find you, usually the cafeteria or main hallway is a good place.
Be nice, curtious, a little cautious, but smile. If people know you are friendly, they will want to meet you and get to know you better. Oh and one more thing ... don't try to be someone you're not. Don't dress like the rest of the crowd just to try and belong. You would be surprised how much the boys get turned off by the Brittany Spears look now days.

This is what works for me, sit with some people that looks like they'd be cool with you, vice versa, for me it's punk, for you, whatever, and if someone doesn't accept you, **** them.
