Split- Stretch first. Do some lunges to get warmed up. Make sure you warm up properly though or else you could pull or tear a muscle, and that hurts!!
Put your front foot on top of something 1-2 feet off the ground and your second foot on the ground. Rest both of your hands on whatever you use for your front foot.
Go as far down into the split as you possibly can. If it hurts really badly, STOP!
Hold this for 60 seconds. Constantly try to push yourself farther down.
After one minute, shake out your legs and repeat for another minute.
Do this 5 times in a row per day. The more you do, of course, the better. You will gradually get farther and farther down into your split.
Go for it girl! Dancelines can be a lot of fun and you will learn a lot. If you have to do a split, just remember that it isn't something you are going to be able to do on the first day. Or the second, or the tenth. Splits involve stretching muscles and you want to do that very carefully so you don't hurt yourself.
Begin by kneeling on your back leg, with your front leg stretched out straight. Now lean forward as far as is comfortable. If you can do that without pain, you are ready for the next step, and that is putting the front leg straight in front of you and the back leg straight behind you. Support yourself on your hands, and lower as much of your weight as you can, on your stretched out legs. Hold it for 30 seconds, then GRADUALLY raise yourself up. You have to hold a stretch for a minimum of 30 seconds to help the muscles elongate. Do this several times a day and gradually you will find yourself getting closer and closer to the floor.

This site is really good..it has a whole list of helpful stretches and tells you how long you should hold them for, too! (and its not too complex)
Remember, stretching for the splits is hard work, so stay committed!! Good luck...
(by the way...I've taken advice from that site and it's ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! I'm only on week one of my 3-weeks-to-the-splits-stretchi... and I can already notice that I am getting closer!)
