Higher English - Atonement by Ian McEwan...?

Question:For my higher English personal study (this includes selecting a text, reading it, choosing an area of study e.g. theme, characters, plot etc. and writing an essay about it) this year, i was considering choosing Atonement by Ian McEwan..

Has anyone ever read this book? What did you think about it? Also.. did it have enough depth to write an essay about it?

Answers:
I think Atonement is an excellent book and would provide many areas of study for you. I think you should discuss your choice with your teacher and they will be able to help you to decide. You must also address the matter of the plagiarism issues that have been made against this work and whether or not you should discuss these in your essay. York make excellent 'notes on. . .' study guides and they may make one for Atonement that may help you. May i suggest some other novels you could consider? You can Wiki them and have a quick glance at a summary to see if there are any you would like. . .

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie - Muriel Spark
Cat's Eye - Margaret Atwood (i used this and got an A for my Higher)
The Bridge - Iain Banks
The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner - James Hogg
Sunset Song - Lewis Grassic Gibbon
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
The Life of Pi - Yann Martel

Quite a bit of Scottish Lit in there too. Good luck, whatever you choose!
