This all depends. If a school is located too far away from places to eat, it stands to reason that students cannot eat elsewhere in a reasonable amount of time. However, if a school is near those places, then many times, it is better to have the open campus. When I was in high school, I enjoyed our open campus up until one of our classmates got killed in a tragic car accident during lunch time. Our campus was closed very soon afterward. Now that I have teenagers of my own, I prefer to see the campus closed.
The site I gave really explains a lot about the controversy and reiterates my views. Remember that from the time a parent drops a child off at school until the time the parent picks him/her up (or from when the bus arrives until it takes them home), the school is completely liable for their welfare.
There has been an evolution in the
adoption of open and closed campuses and now
the trend is going back to closed campuses once
again. There is a 71% high public priority for
closing school campuses according to Public
agenda, First Things First. Closed campuses are
those that require students to stay in school
during the entire school day while open
campuses permit their students to leave campus
during the school period. Generally closed
school campus report less behavior problems
than do open campuses. In closed campuses
students may only leave the school building if
there is a written consent from the parent or
guardian or for the participation in specialized
activities. Schools legally are in loco parentis
during the entire school period, should anything
happen to the student, schools are held
accountable and liable.
Because of the high risk factor associated
with open climates and the general costs of
litigation, many schools are going back to the
closed campus system.
Good idea. Parents may have trouble getting kids to the college for tours. Hopefully the high school can have a full day set aside and have a lot of schools show up. Kids can talk to officials (colleges), and eliminate schools.
Well Yeah! I mean if you're' there all day you might as well have SOME freedom... But some schools have way to much and some don't have any at all.
When I was in high school open campus meant being able to come and go as you please. If you wanted to leave in the middle of 2 nd period and come back during 6th you could. It's nice because parents don't have to worry about checking out their kids and stuff. But the kids are more likely not to go school till they feel like it and leave when they feel like it, which means they could fall behind.
