Question:I am currently tutoring a seven year old who has difficulties in her maths work and she is has me at my wits' end. She will not listen to what I say. She is not rude or argumentative but I can tell her the same thing a hundred times and she will begin talking about other things (even if I am in the middle of a sentence), looking around, or dancing about the entire time and she just does not stop, ever, it is as if her mind is incapable of absorbing anything I say. She is not hard of hearing or autistic. This child dropped her pencil no less than twenty two times during one half hour session and continued to fiddle with it no matter what I said. If I take it from her between problems, she will instantly begin to play with her hair, the paper, her shirt, or whatever else she could find. We repeated the same rule each time she tried a problem and by the end, she still obviously had no idea what the rule was, after 25 - 30 problems! She will not participate in any games involving maths.
Answers:
Well, as a person living with ADD, (By the way the technical medical term is ADHD, with or without hyperactivity, so technically I have ADHD, without hyperactivity) I can say that sounds like me. You need to make it something that applies to her. Like for me it was music, and my reward was music. My algebra teacher related the lessons to music and he gave me albums from my favorite band when i did x amount of assignments. So really relate it to her and REWARDS, INCENTIVES, and TREATS, and especially BREAKS!! and maybe talk to the parents and see about ADHD testing. (It is way easier to do it young)
Hope i helped.
Firstly, i used to have people like her in my class. If she is disrupting the class, take her outside. By taking her outside, theres no one to be silly in front of. When shes outside, ignore her. Some children enjoy watching adults getting frustrated. Talk to her parents more importantly.
well, i don't know what to suggest. but, maybe she has a crush on you?
I hate teachers !! thats what she thinks and i might sugguest less talk more action
