Do kids in the US really not have to wear a school uniform?

Question:Or is it just a film (movie) thing?
I'm in the UK and everyone has to (I think it's law)

Answers:
Some kids do wear uniforms in like religious schools and private schools. But, even some public school have to. (My best friend found this out when he moved.) I, fortunately don't have to. Plus, I'm sorry that you have to. :(
no not everyone in the us has to wear a uniform some schools do though
thats not true. I wear a uniform, but I go to independent school. Most public schools don't wear uniforms, but most private schools do. So its all in the movies.
most kids in public schools don't have to wear uniforms, but they usually have a dress code for things like skirt and sleeve lengths.
i've gone to a private school all my life, and most private schools do have uniforms.
not every school has to... only private schools or schools whos kids don't follow the the dress code.
I didn't wear a uniform. My husband did, but he went to Catholic school. I think all Catholic schools here have uniforms. A few of the public schools have uniforms but not too many.
Hi, My name is Aaron Park, and I live in Los Angeles, California, United States.

First of all, there is NO LAW that we have to wear uniform at school. It just depends on schools.

Students have to wear uniforms because of following reasons :

1. Principal and parents' decision
2. District's decision on school
3. School's low test scores(There is a test called California Standard Test in California. Each school gets amount of points according to students' test scores(English, Math, Science, and sometimes history).
4. Private Schools(Private school's principal chooses, and it is not by district's decision.)

If a school district orders a school to require students to wear uniforms, then they must obey them. But it is NOT a law.
Most public schools don't make students wear uniforms, but, they do have dress codes. The dress codes vary from school to school. Some schools have strict dress codes and some don't. Some let you wear shorts, some don't. Some let you wear sleeveless shirts, some don't. It all depends on the school.

Even some private schools you don't have to wear uniforms but the dress code is very strict. Kahki's and solid shirts only... Things like that.
well not everyone in the us only some schools my school you don't
there's been talk of it in my little backwater town, but
don't expect much to come of it ------- it's unusual in the US
to see school uniforms.
Depends on the school. Most (I'd say all but I don't know that for sure) private schools have a uniform that everyone has to wear. A lot of the public schools have uniforms also, and many of those that do not have extremely strict dress codes.

All of the elementary schools, middle schools, and high school I went to (across many different states) did NOT have uniforms. Although 2 years after I graduated, the high school I attended instituted uniforms.
