Homework??

Question:My daughter started 1st grade this week and she has had homework every night (not hard stuff, fill in the blanks from the group of words, basic addition and subtraction, stuff she learned in kg). I thought this was great but but a couple of my friends with children in the same grade say their children don't have homework yet. How far into the school year are you supposed to start getting homework and take home projects?

Answers:
it all depends on the school, the teacher, the type of education your child is recieving.

is she going to a private or a public school? public schools nowadays are tightening their grips. even first graders get homework the first and second week of school. some other schools will probably wait until like october and the child is more settled, to administer homework.

i've been a teacher for 10 years. i'm a teacher on the second grade level. the first 2 weeks of school i don't give homework, because i don't want the kdis to struggle transitioning wise. they do no work over the summer and then they recieve homework the second day? it just seems like too much their little minds can handle! in addition, when i give homework at this age and level; i only give one thing a night. that way they can really focus on it and try their best on it. whether the assignment is to fill out a worksheet or it is to make a small four line poem up that ryhmes; i dont like to overdue homework. i feel homework should not be an ongoing process. three worksheets a night is nonsense! the kids are going to learn to hate school and feel it's stress from an early standpoint. i've been educated by many top teachers and let me tell you; they all reccomend to go easy on the homework. maybe your school is overdoing it? or maybe your friends school isn't doing enough? it's hard to know.

hope i've helped!
first- don't compare- i am sure your kid and your friend's kid aren't exactly the same and thus need different things. second- since so many parents want their kid to be the "top" (maybe not in first grade, but by third or fouth) they need to start learning study skills now. I would give homework in preschool, because, as the teacher, i am training the parents more than i am training the kids.

i give homework on the first day and it is a RARE case that my students don't have homework.
my little brother's in third grade but when he was in first he had maybe sometimes homework and sometimes none.but wen he did it was just things like basic addition and practice spelling flash cards with words like"dogs"and stuff.so ur daughter is fine maybe she could be advanced a little more than others.which is good.also wen she gets to about second grade she'll get to make stuff that will count as a project my lil brother got to make a caterpillar!he thought it was fun.lol.
