Can my school do this to me?!?

Question:im a senior in high school and i started school this week
i go to a private school in texas

at my school we are only required to have 3 math credits to graduate...the college that i am going to attend is a specialty school because i already know what i want to do. i plan to be a chef. I was enrolled in a math class and i wanted to drop it and not take a math at all. I would just have a free period to study.

My counselor and teacher are not letting me drop it. They say that it looks good for college but i spoke to the school i'd go to and they dont have a requirement on how many maths i take.

i already take 3 ap classes and math has always been my weakest subject. i gets a's and b's in it but i have to devote a lot of time to and it with the other ap classes i just dont have the time.

i have a 3.78 gpa on a 4.0 scale and i know i would do bad in my math class and i actually wanted to get my gpa higher.

can they force me to take the class if i know i'll do bad?

Answers:
Schools cannot force you to take a class. Possibly the reason they are not letting you switch out is b/c you are not replacing it w/ a class. The school I teach at does not have study halls or free periods, so that could be the case at your school too. But if you wanted to switch your math class for an art class or something like that you should be able to. (and if you school allows study halls or free periods you should be able to). Usually what is most effective for the kids at my school is when their parents call in. So if they won't let you switch, have your parents call/go in to school. Good luck!
be cool and stick it to the man and not do it
Try getting your parents involved. If the requirement is only three years then that should be enough. After all, your parents are paying good money and should have some say. Congrats on the good grades so far.
I am not sure if they can force you to take the class but you should get your parents/guardian involved. Maybe the feel they are protecting you by keeping you at school, but if your parents are ok with you having a free hour, there should be no problem.
Yes, most schools require a certain amount of math credits to graduate. It doesn't matter if your college doesn't require it, it matters what the high school needs to graduate. So just stick with it and work hard and you will do well. Also, possibly look into getting into an easier math class...like don't take Calculus see if there is like Statistics and probablity or something easier.
I dont think they can "force" you to take any class.. If you fufill your credits with the other classes, then you will be able to drop the extra math class. I would just drop the class, it wont look bad that you dropped a class, it would look bad if your GPA is lowered.
Congrats on the good grades ;). Like somebody else said, get your parents involved. It is your choice, your future and their money. Your school shouldn't beable to force you into something that is not required. Go in there everyday before school, after, during lunch etc and badger your teacher and/or counselor about it. It's not their choice. Good luck!
They can't force you, but I think you need 4 years of math to graduate? Or maybe it's only my school.
To put it simply uh...yes. Sucks but they can pretty well do what they want. Got to love private school. Try getting your parents to talk to them, maybe they're afraid you won't be challenging yourself.
just take it
Just a thought.I don't know if the school can force you to take math however maybe they are trying to encourage you to keep your options open so you will not restrict yourself education wise if you change your mind on your career path.I agree you should involve your parents in this situation.Congratulations on your good grades.
