English lit?

Question:I'm kinda lousy at English but I want to get good as my career in the future involves getting a good English grade. It's mainly English literature I'm having trouble with as I don't know wtf Shakespeare is on about or any old writer. Does anyone have any tips on improving English in general and English literature?

Answers:
You might not want to hear this, but it IS true that the best way to improve your English skills is by reading. It sounds dumb and obvious, but if you read ALOT, you get better at understanding too. Like I would tell you that if you don't understand Shakespeare (which most people don't and I never plan on being able to understand him) just work your way up and read novels or plays that are less intense first.
Cliff notes as a tool for interpretation not as a means not to read the book. Take it one page at a time or even one sentence at a time. Change the words around and substitute you for ye and hence for from now on and things like that until you have a readable sentence. the Bible is the same way. You just have to twist it to make sense to you and then you can understand it. Also renting the movies helps too. You may not know what he is saying but you can tell by the actor that he is ticked so that will give you an idea of what is going on. Shakespeare is tough but you can learn it if you make it make sense to you.
You know I was wondering the same thing myself before I got my results. All you need to be able to do is have an idea, be able to explain it and show some evidence. It's a bit like history in that sense. It also helps if you can identify things like similes and metaphors because they are really common.

Another thing is, even if you get low marks in coursework, you can always bring it up to your desired grade in the final exam. I got an A for Inspector Calls, B for Jane Eyre and Romeo and Juliet, but I got an A* overall... Still that's no excuse not to try, I just prefer the exams to coursework.
