What did he mean?

Question:In the Grapes of Wrath, what did Tom Joad mean when he said that him and his father "never was no hand to write."?

Answers:
Formerly writing was known as hand writing and 'hand' for short. As in his hand was rounded and uniform.
So it becomes clear that neither men had much skill at writing.
Means he could not write or wasn't any good at writing.
No use at writing so get someone else to do it for him.
He's no help , no good.
