Help on a quote?

Question:"To be one, to be united is a great thing. But to respect the right to be different is even greater"
-bono

what do you think this means?
i think it means that is better to be yourself than to be the same
but im not quite sure. help?

Answers:
your interpretation is good but it says to respect the right to be different so it could also mean that no matter if you fit in a crowd or not you should respect one another

just a guess
More than that, I think he's saying that while it is great to be united with another or others - in a relationship, in a cause, in a way of life - it's even more important to respect the fact that others have the right to hold an opposing view. That is, after all, supposed to be the essence of a free society.
I think its related to Gahndi's quote that "honest disagreement is often a good sign of progress". I think they're both saying that its nonproductive to be the same just to be the same. Openess, Honesty and respect for differing opinions is just as important.
