I think this means that life is a way of getting from one point ( our creation) to another ( closer to God) . I think the second part about "crossing it" means to life your life to the fullest but don't expect to stay here permanently ( thus build no house on it) We all will die in the end!!

to me... it means..."enjoy the adventures of life. The challenges, rewards, demands, and your failures. But dont focus on just one of them. Keep experiencing all them. Challenge yourself, sometimes you fail, sometimes you are rewarded. Dont put to many demands on your life( ie.. talking on the cell phone, beer in hand, as you are speeding down the freeway) Because that is when life bites you.
