To regard history, or past events, as useless or unimportant will not help you in the long run. I think he is saying you can learn from history - don't make the same mistakes other people did, like don't invade Russia in the winter. ;)
It means learn from history, that through knowledge comes growth, and those that refuse to learn from past, are forever nothing more then self indulgent children, never to grow to be full rational adults.
