Where did the phrase "God Awful" originate?

Question:

Answers:
well the definition of awful is actually something bad and also just being full of awe. The phrase God awful is probably more likely "God, awful." as if what happened was so awe inspiring that God would be full of awe. The grammar is like the start of sentence where you introduce someone then give an emotion which helps explain the why and how of the actions or thoughts to follow in the text. Jack, sickly, hobbled down the hall to the nurses office. take out the sickly and picture painted is a little thinner.
I think I made it up whilst watching "So You Think You Can Dance."
Maybe people used it referring to something like Sodom and Gomorrah ,just a guess though
