Answers:
Hi there,
I totally understand your dilemma because recently I purchased a new laptop that came with Vista. And I agree with you when you say its the biggest piece of ****. It is possible for sure to downgrade to Windows XP however, not without severe headaches along the way. However, I do not know your level of computer skill is. The only thing you need to remember is that you must make sure that you have all the Windows XP drivers for your sound card, video card, wireless LAN, etc, etc, and not (of course) the Vista drivers.

I have an HP laptop, and when I contacted them about downgrading, they told me that they will not provide support to laptops that are running anything other than the original OS (in this case Vista). So be warned, there might also be some warantee issues.

All in all, Vista sucks but its a big headache to downgrade if your trying to do it with a laptop. Although I have never tried downgrading with a regular stock computer.

Anyways, I hope this helps somewhat.

See you on the other side (the XP side)!
I don't know, but I believe you didn't receive the answer you were looking for because you posted under quotations. Good luck.

P.S. I'm a Mac user. They have always been easy to use and I hope they always will be. ;-)
