What is meant by the phase "carry a spear in the third act"?

Question:I have encountered this phrase several times in different books and have no idea what is means.

Answers:
In plays or operas in which soldiers carry spears, a "spear carrier" is someone who has a minor role or is a member of the chorus. This has come to mean anyone with a minor role.
its probably just referring to a lot of dramas / tragedies or possibly shakespear more specifically since in the third act is usually the climax where ppl start dying. people alwasy start stabbing ppl and so you should watch your back... im not sure what it means in real life but i think ^ thats a decent guess
It usually refers to a wannabee actor or an actor just starting out in the field.

It is sometimes referred to as "paying ones dues"!

Most wannabees don't make it ! Those that do recall the bit roles at the beginning of their careers: carrying a spear in the third act.
