What does the phrase "the thing within the cup" means?

Question:Tao chien wrotethe poem putting the blame on his sons. I can't figure out what the phrase means.

Answers:
any random stuff inside a cup I guess...
I know nothing about Tao Chien (is that chinese?). It doesn't seem to have an Ameircan meaning.
a wild guess: that which you have now
For example, if you have only one cup and there is something in it, then you are going to have to get rid of that before you can put something else there. I would use it in the sense that if you have hatred in your heart you will have to rid yourself of that before love can come in. Or if you have agoal to be rich you are going to have to get rid of that goal before you can have the goal of helping all humanity. Things like that.
